The best tax residency tracker apps in 2026

The best tax residency tracker app is the one that counts days the way your tax authority does and never misses one. We compared seven apps on App Store ratings, price, background tracking, history import, rules and evidence. Bounded has the most users, TaxBird and Domicile365 are the established US state trackers, and Monaeo is built for companies.

Disclosure: Tax Days is our app. We list it, say where it is weaker, and use only figures we could check on the App Store or on the vendor’s own pricing page.

1. Tax Days(our app)

Best for: US states plus countries in one app, in 33 languages. Price: Free, then $4.99/mo or $29.99/yr.

Strengths

  • Rules engine covering all 50 US states, the federal Substantial Presence Test, Schengen 90/180, the UK SRT and international thresholds.
  • Arrival and departure days count in both places, the way New York and most residency rules count them.
  • Evidence attachments on days, plus export for your accountant.
  • Localized into 33 languages, more than any other app here.

Watch out for

  • It is our app, so weigh this list with that in mind.
  • Very few App Store ratings so far.
  • Puerto Rico support counts days; it does not run the full bona fide residence test.

2. Bounded (Country Days Tracker: Bounded)

Best for: Rebuilding past travel from your photo library. Price: Free + subscription: annual tiers $19.99 to $99.99, or $5.99/mo.

Strengths

  • The largest user base in the category, released February 2026.
  • Imports travel history from photo-library locations, so you start with past days filled in.

Watch out for

  • The most common complaint in its reviews is imported history that is wrong, with no way to see where a day came from.
  • Reviewers report meeting the subscription only after completing setup.

3. Country Days Tracker (Andrey Solovyev)

Best for: Simple country day counts for Europe and UK travellers. Price: Free (7-day history), then $39.99/yr or $5.99 to $7.99/mo.

Strengths

  • Background tracking, with photos and files in its PDF export.
  • Available in 12 languages, with a Puerto Rico day tracking option.

Watch out for

  • Country level only: no US state rules engine.
  • Most of its negative reviews are about price and the 7-day free history.

4. TaxBird

Best for: US snowbirds who want a long-established state tracker. Price: Free + $39.99/yr or $4.99/mo.

Strengths

  • One of the oldest US state day trackers, with a year-end report to share.
  • Covers US states and Canada.

Watch out for

  • Reviewers repeatedly report missed days and 'No Location Received' errors unless the app is opened.
  • Reviews describe being unable to edit or correct entries.

What to test before you pay

Across 139 one- and two-star written reviews of the larger apps, complaints cluster into a few themes: price and paywalls (about 37%), imported history that turns out wrong (22%), background tracking that misses days (about 21%), and entries that cannot be edited (14%). Those are the things to test in a free trial:

  • Does it record a day on which you never open the app?
  • Can you see where an imported or inferred day came from, and correct it?
  • Does a day spent in two places count in both, as most residency rules require?
  • Does it know your actual threshold, such as New York’s 184 days or the UK SRT, not just 183?
  • Can you export dated, contemporaneous records with evidence for your accountant?

Questions

Tracker app FAQ

What is the best tax residency tracker app?

It depends on what you need to prove. For US states and countries together with a rules engine, Tax Days (ours) or Domicile365. For filling in past travel from photos, Bounded, with the caveat that reviewers often find imported days wrong. For simple country counts in Europe, Country Days Tracker. For companies tracking executives, Monaeo.

Which tax residency app has the most users?

Bounded, with 997 App Store ratings across 16 storefronts when we checked in October 2026, followed by Country Days Tracker (439), TaxBird (259) and Domicile365 (241).

Do these apps work without opening them every day?

They are meant to. In practice, missed days are one of the most common complaints in the category, concentrated in TaxBird reviews. Whatever app you use, check the days near your threshold against boarding passes and card statements.

Is a tracker app enough evidence for an audit?

A log made as you travel is a contemporaneous record, which auditors generally weigh more heavily than a reconstruction. It is not a substitute for third-party evidence such as travel and card records, and no app can guarantee an audit outcome.

How did you rank these apps?

By fit for someone who must prove a day count to a tax authority: rules coverage, how days are counted, evidence, and whether reviewers trust the tracking. Ratings and prices were taken from the App Store and vendor pricing pages in October 2026. Tax Days is our app and is listed first; the rest are ordered by our assessment.
