Questions

When the tax year starts, and why it matters

When does the UK tax year start and end?

The UK tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April of the following year. The Statutory Residence Test counts your UK days over this window, so trips in late March and early April can fall into different tax years.

Which countries don't use the calendar year?

The best-known exceptions are the UK (6 April), Australia (1 July), New Zealand, India, and Hong Kong (1 April), and South Africa (1 March). Most other countries measure the individual tax year over the calendar year.

Why do tax year dates matter for residency?

Day-count residency rules are measured over the jurisdiction's own year. The same travel pattern can put you under 183 days in one country's window and over it in another's, and moving between a calendar-year country and an offset-year country can leave you resident in both for overlapping periods.

Is the tax year the same as the filing year?

Usually not. Income earned in a tax year is typically reported and assessed afterwards, and naming conventions differ: some countries name the year by when it starts, others (like South Africa) by when it ends. Check how your jurisdiction labels its years before comparing paperwork.

Does this calculator store any data?

No. It runs entirely in your browser and nothing you enter leaves your device.
